ABOUT HOMEWARD BOUND GUESTHOUSE
Homeward Bound Guesthouse was inspired by one extraordinary dog: Herc (short for Hercules).

Herc arrived after being rescued from an abusive owner who had been filmed striking him repeatedly with a leash. This big, 65-pound mastiff-mix puppy came to me absolutely terrified of the world. He barked out of fear, flinched when people reached to pet him, and then — when everything felt too overwhelming — climbed right into my lap, seeking refuge in a place he knew he was safe.

With time, gentleness, and predictable routines, Herc slowly stopped flinching, began wagging his tail when he met people, and learned how to trust again. The dog who once cowered became a dog who loved to frolic and play. Today, he’s living his best life with his adoptive family — running freely in a fenced yard with his two fur siblings and cracking them up daily with his goofy, sweet personality.

And witnessing that journey changed me.

Watching a traumatized, timid dog relearn trust wasn’t just heartwarming — it was transformative. Herc’s healing inspired me to create Homeward Bound Guesthouse: a place built on education, empathy, and hands-on learning, so more dogs like him can find a life filled with love, and more people can experience the profound impact of fostering.

Seeing a dog rediscover safety, joy, and connection showed me what fostering can do — not just for the animals, but for the people who walk alongside them.

And Herc wasn’t the last.

Since then, I’ve witnessed this healing transformation again and again — scared dogs becoming playful, shut-down dogs finding their spark, and overlooked dogs blossoming the moment they feel safe. Each one is a reminder of how powerful it is when people open their homes and their hearts.

This is the kind of empathy we should be modeling for the next generation.
